Many people may remember this scene: last Wednesday morning as Premier Wen Jiabao inspected Qushan Town near Beichuan County, he made way for a stretcher carrying a three-year-old girl. Little Song Xinyi's parents gave their own lives to protect her when the quake hit.
It was 7 O'clock Wednesday morning when rescuers discovered Xinyi. In the rubble of a house, she was covered by the bodies of her parents, already dead. At the moment when disaster struck, they sheltered their little daughter with their last strength.
Rescuers could see Xinyi's head down in the rubble, her wide eyes blinking up at them. The rescue crew had no professional tools available at the time, so they rushed to fetch equipment to avoid a collapse.
A collapsed wall had toppled down on Xinyi's parents, killing them and trapping the girl beneath her parents' bodies. A downpour made the rescue even harder. Rescuers worked furiously to decrease the pressure on the little girl, using wooden sticks to support the wall fragment. Xinyi's cries for help touched everyone's heart.
At 9:40 in the morning, rescuers were finally able to extricate Xinyi. It had been over 40 hours since the quake, and the little girl had survived aftershocks and rainstorms in horrifying conditions.
Song Xinyi is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mianyang City. Thanks to the work of doctors, she has regained some of her former liveliness. Unfortunately, she lost her right leg due to pressure from the collapsed wall. Doctors say Xinyi may be able to leave the hospital within two or three weeks. Her uncle, who's been working in Jiangsu Province, will be coming to Mianyang as soon as possible to get her.
